The capital of the newly-created Savanna Region is to witness its first-ever demonstration as a result of a decision to spread the various departments of the Regional Coordinating Council to all the district capitals in the region.
Dwellers in the regional capital are protesting that the creation of the region will be meaningless if key departments in health, education and security (police station) sectors are moved from the regional capital.
Reports from Damongo indicates that the District Chief Executives across the various districts in the region met over the weekend and took a decision to take the Regional Health Directorate to Salaga as well as others away from the capital.
The decision has angered the youth of Damango who say it makes no sense to create a region without government instalments in the capital.
The youth of Damongo, led by the youth chief, on Monday, 9 September 2019, stormed the Jakpa Palace to register their displeasure to the overlord of the Gonja Traditional Area, Yagbonwura Boresah Tuntumba and his elders.
The Yagbonwura, in responding to the concerns raised by the youth, said he and his elders are not against the decentralisation of departments or development to the other districts, but looking at the larger picture, any attempt to dislocate certain core departments from the centre will slow down the pace of central administration and coordination and affect the development of the entire region.
The overlord later had a closed-door meeting with the Regional Minister, Mr Salifu Adam Braimah who later spoke to the media.
Mr Braimah said he was only implementing the vision of President Nana Akufo-Addo for the new region.
He disclosed that unlike the older regions, it was the intention of the government to decentralise development in the six newly-created regions.
